Eric Yang-Editor of Gear Patrol Talk About His Relationship Of Watches

1-What sparked your interested in Panerai?

A few years ago when I was interested in upgrading my timepiece I wanted to purchase a brand that was respected amongst those that appreciated fine timepieces. Officine Panerai was a brand I had long come to respect from the sidelines. It was a brand who’s craftsmanship and truth to it’s own legacy transcended itself. The fact that they tend to be around 44mm in size didn’t hurt either since my wrists are slightly larger in diameter. From there, it was only a matter of choosing a model.

2-How many watches do you own?

I own a vintage Omega Automatic gold watch I had shipped to Switzerland to have restored from the ground up. The gold bracelet has been replaced with an Italian alligator strap. It’s especially meaningful to me as it was the watch my mother gave to my father when the were married nearly 30 years ago. This is for special occasions and those days I am in suits. My daily wear is an Officine Panerai Luminor Marina PAM00111 (#600/3500). I have a StrapCulture Legend HM leather strap that I alternate alongside the original rubber diving strap. Its exposition back is stunning and I find something very soothing about manually winding the unit every day, even though it doesn’t need to be. I also own an EOS Zephyr watch. Its got a great casual and urban ruggedness about it.

3-What kind of cars do you like/drive?

I drive a white Land Rover LR2. It’s luxurious, economical and best of all, far and few between. It’s also the perfect size for living in New York City. My biggest regret was selling a 1973 Land Rover Series III that I spent two years restoring. When the time is right, I’ll make a foray back into German sport sedans (again). The Mercedes Benz C63 AMGhas always caught my eye. Brutal strength, an understated body and atouch of absurdity.

4-How long have you been blogging on Gear Patrol?

Gear Patrol was established April 1, 2007 (April Fool’s Day) but it’s far from a joke, though we do appreciate a good joke. It has been a personal passion since. Just to clarify, Gear Patrol may “look” like a blog [for now], but we prefer to think of it as a men’s online journal. A
resource written by men, for men.

5-What do you do for a living?

First and foremost I edit and foster content for Gear Patrol. If you were to ask me what provides me the ability to pursue that passion. I would tell you that I am a Senior Producer at a major media company. Unfortunately, I cannot share which company it is or what I work on specifically.

6-What is your position at Gear Patrol?

Technically, my position is the Managing Editor and founder of Gear Patrol. I prefer to think of myself in a position, whatever it might be called, that’s helping advance men in some way, including me.

7-How many watches do you buy per year?

Ironically, time has no relation to when I make a timepiece purchase. If the work has a special calling to me, then I’ll do what’s necessary to make that purchase. Money doesn’t hurt either. Timepieces are a joy for me, not an item to collect. It’s important [to me that the watch reflect a personal modus operandi of sorts, not be another notch in the belt of a massive collection. Nothing against massive collections.

8-Are there any watches you plan on buying in the future?

An Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT (PAM 00233). The fact that it’s driven by Panerai’s own Calibre P.2002 movement makes it just the sweeter. Perhaps one day, if the cards are right, a steel IWC Big Pilot or Bell & Ross Instrument BR 01-97 Power Reserve Orange will find their way onto my wrist.

9-Where do you live/ are you from?

I hail from Knoxville, Tennessee. I now reside in New York City. One might argue that it was quite the transition moving from somewhere like Knoxville to New York, but I prefer to think that they both contribute strongly to who I am. Southern small-town genteel with New York refinement.

10-What made you decide to start a blog?

Because, as cliche as it may sound, my only desire in life is to help make things just a little easier for people. A men’s online journal sounded like a good place to start.

If it is a very old watch, then it may have been made by the founder of the Wicks Organ Co.; Adolph Wick. He and his brothers were jewelers back around 1900, and had a jewelry store in Highland Illinois. They made watches around that time, Adolph was the one who pushed the rest into the direction of making organs.
Other then that, if it is newer, then it could be a promotional watch made for the Wicks Furniture Company???? Or some other company with the name Wicks. But again, if it is old, then it's as stated above. I hope this was helpful.
